Entertainment?

Entertainment is arguably the underrated causality of our cultural identity.
It is defining us in ways that most of us are barely aware, and it seems
to seep its way deep beneath the layers of language, hidden from the visible,
the visible structure of our cognitive realities. Entertainment is essentially
the institutionalization of the ultra myth. Where before man was only
able to tell stories by campfire to define his morality and ethos, his
nature in relation to his place, his encounterships. Now through the methodology
of mechanical reproduction and the application of a systematic application
of behavioral psychology, the media specialist, the ultra storyteller is
remediating the medium, has reinvented the constitution of story telling
and it's purpose. And with that it's technological application has also
been transfigured in ways the cave man could only dare dream of. But in
the following sense the western man is still a Neanderthal.

In a recent PBS special on the history of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, it was
boldly announced in the note of congratu-adulation by narration, that the
movie industry (specifically the movie musical) was created to distract
the public from the reality of war. The ?war reel?, however doctored, to
the affect of civic consumption produced a ?negative? mood within the psychography
of the American public. Guess what? America has been escaping ever since.
It seems that we cannot escape enough. Last night on ABC's Nightline the
mayor of an American town declared that he ?was to busy to watch the Senate
trials on Clinton, but that he would watch if Monica Lewinsky, Kenneth
Starr and Clinton were forced to testify.? It would be something that he
?could not miss.? The Disneyization of the ?average consumer? psyche is
indicative of the nuerotic-schizophrenic who refuses to be able tell the
difference between his life and the make believe characters he invents
to represent it. He fails to understand the significance of it's original
intent. he is divorced from the historical context of his behavior.

I've just read today that the limbic system is the engine of all our
flight/fight responses (Pibrams four F's fighting, fleeing, feeding and
fornication). It is the harbinger of our base aggressivity, our instinctual
self left over from the days when we dwelled on the depths of the ocean
floor. This ?lizard brain? has been incumbent before we crawled out of
it to dwell among our dogs within the holes of caves. It should be of no
surprise then to a conscious individual?one who is rational and is equipped
to discriminate between actual events and the temporary high jacking of
this consciousness due it's interruption by extra-viceral simulated events,
that a pattern occurs. Namely the repetition of the previously stated process
and it's role and functionality. Whereby, upon this state of reflection
we come to discover that the meaning, the connectivity between man and
his environment can be broken and exchanged with a series of well executed
stimuli which are designed to induce an emotional response, a response
which is distracting, emotive, compulsive, and obsessive. No doubt this
behaviorism comprises most of our most expensive and equally expressive
forms of entertainment. This design is produced to provoke a response within
the limbic system of the brain. It is effective, so much so that often
we actually feel and mentate that what we are seeing is real. We feel lost
in the grips of a powerful, artificially enhanced action scene. We lose
ourselves. In fact the measure of success in entertainment is assessed
with how close the psuedo-experience is felt in correlation to a hypothesized
?real? event. It is exactly this substitution of meaning in Aesops Fable-istic
sense, with a limbatic experiential psuedo-reality that is creating
a meta-attention deficit dissorder amongst the worker/consumer. In
fact, fleeing and fighting if you will notice is 90% of all Hollywood subject
matter. Even the plots are rote. The neocortex and frontal lobes belong
to Higher Order Consciousness (HOC). The capacity for independent, distinguishing
thought depends on the development of this part of the brain. What happens
when a series of interruptions, psuedo-realities and distortions of historical
and contextual mutations high jack the development of an internal, cognitive,
executive centering? A personal study should be done to verify the effects
on brain activity due to the overexposure of commercials and Hollywood
action films. The results are somewhat predictable.

Where exactly is the war, and who is our enemy? Enemy mine.

We are alienating the worker/consumer from the process which leads
to the executive globality of mind in a unified and self witnessing consciousness.
Even serious journalism, deemed far to expensive for everyday broadcast
is shoved aside in favor of ?commentary? opinion columns and interviews
(see Channel Zero documentary). Even in ?the news? the content is always
partial to violence, physical or psychological. But this limbaticaly oriented
content is only a ruse which hides the dysfunctionality of our higher mental
cognition. Override becomes impotent in the face of hyper stimuli.

?...frontal lesions can lead either to perseverative, compulsive behavior
or to distractibility in monkeys, and this is also true of humans (Pribram
et. al. 1964, Oscar-Berman 1975). Extreme forms of distractibility and
obsession are due to lack of ?sensitivity? to feedback from consequences.?
(Karl H. Pribram, The varieties of Conscious Experience: Biological Roots
and Social Usages, Essay)

We are put to work in civic duty so that we may be afforded the luxury
of amusement and distraction for the economic potentiality of commerce.

In short, entertainment is the science of distraction and it's application
in the media medium of amusement technologies.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Who am I takes on new meaning in the environment of the technocratic
mythology of consumer consciousness.
You must buy your way in to identity my dear.
Not to find it, but to expire it, ultimatum ultimately into a cycle
of trend identities
Where jettisoned modalities are borne in and die out each season.
Respond quickly, the face of the warrior changes but the sword kills
just the same
It's new and confused, a pink ray gun with day glow gamma transmission
cyberoptic mutations.
Change not, the mechanism of the trigger,
but the combined potentiality of the effect is here in the present
just for you.
Happy birthday consumer, where are YOU standing?
For a full frontal lobotomy you do not have to even be within view.
Now you only need log on, down load, remote view, sound off
Bang it, suck tit, no milk get it?
Only the eclotrocenaphelographism of radiating ignorance in place
of

Advertising?

Advertising is the industrialization, the mass production of the
lying technique as made possible by the invention of the printing press.
It's reprographic mechanisms create multiple copies of falsities for the
psychic ingestion of human subjects. ?They? were not willing participants,
but were made so by the insistent ramming of graphic whispers which pointed
to their physical and material inadequacies. Your ?this? or ?that? is not
big or fast enough. This must be so only in relationship to something else.
That something else is ? the collaboration of the society which desires
to continuously invent articles of curiosity and utility. The new utilities
may not need be better anymore, only relatively so to the consumers perception
of inferiority. But it does not matter. Because the goal is to control
the speed and intensity of desire cycling. Since the inventors and
manufacturers of objects cannot create or control these cycles on their
own ? it is not their business. Manufacturers of messages as an institution
have been created to concoct hyper audible voices which compete for psychographic
space in each and every person. These voices are seen by everyone at once,
insuring corroboration. These voices only need to be heard and seem convincing
in relationship to the objective reality whose own cycle only seems to
be defined by mans insistence of a more ?truthful? artificial nature.
But it is artificial. At this leakage, the truth/pain insists in the mind
of the advertising man who must confront his own construct of self. Who
created him? Did he? His real nature pours out upon contemplation and spoils
his game, and so he goes nowhere. So instead he invents another one, an
artificial self to stave off his boredom. He is not satisfied with himself.
If he was he would not need the unessential and its accompanying environments
of entertainment and simulated competitive frameworks. he would even do
away with his outmoded, neurotic, half reasoned belief systems.

The ad man is in complicity and conflict with his inner consumer.
He knows that he is not only lying to the ?target audience? as a whole,
but he barely knows the real nature or beginnings of the lie and so cannot
blame anyone. Instead he ignores it. Also when buys an article of leisure,
entertainment vehicle or tool for himself he must act like a consumer not
a professional. He has no other choice. His ?civilization? has even designed
the parameters of his own behavior. He cannot be critical in any real sense.
In fact his critical faculties are only sharp in relationship to his
vocation. He ?goes? or his subjective world comes to an end. He cannot
break from ?it?, or so he believes. After all what would his dreams be
like then? They would not sound or be edited like car commercials. There
would be no special effects. He would not dream of Elle McFearsome in 72
dpi, he would only dream of his inner self, a dismal prospect, an un-Hollywood,
unmanufactured beingness. he would see himself for what he is, but not
in the televised light that he is used to. He would not get up and go to
work because he would consider the exploitation of third world workers
being paid $1.50 per day to create the toilet paper he wipes his rectum
with; and, it would itch from the artificial paper softener, whose by product
is oozing caustic refuse into the water supply causing that tumor to grow
in his liver. He ignores the pain, as he ignores truth and its relevance
in the preceding statement. This ad man goes to work and he buys into it
when he is not at work. He is very sophisticated in his ability to think
in narrow terms. He is tribal, gathering with other co-workers who ignore
the wider causation around him. He insists, must insist that his life is
natural, almost ?spiritual?, and in a great feat of irony he contends that
his environment is the fulfillment of the new world citizens mass dream
potential.

The industry of advertising, like all industries lies on a grid. It
is a sector of the industrialized society of course. It is a meta tool
whose use is to persuade the unfree cattle that the fences do not exist,
but also that the cattle are also wholly inadequate in and of themselves,
a triumph of imagery. But hidden from reason, the seasonality of inadequacy
is a built in feature of objects which makes it necessary to keep ad men.
As cattle eventually grow bored with their surroundings, as they are trained
to do so? it becomes necessary for the manufacturing sector to create new
objects of distraction and utility. The expiration dates are hidden on
them as well, but curiously they compete with the expiration potential
of consumer boredom which increases incrementally each season. The sector
of governance watches the balance sheet of human output and consumption
in order to determine if ?corrections? within the programming policies
of the production/consumption grid need to be made.

The control mechanism is the cultural resistance to new messages based
on a ?kind of ethics?. But it is not a real ethic borne of logic or human
science. The consumer ethic is part cultural tolerance, part psuedo-religious
superstition and part fear. Fear is the power current of all consumer
behavior. Specifically fear of self. If there were no fear of self or others
there would be no ?competitive? frame work and the need for ?positioning?
would not exist. All things on earth would be equal. Advertising as
a utility amplifies the need to distinguish and separate me from them.
Where there is no utility in products, ?identity? as a construct supersedes
all functional qualities. This is why it is necessary to create groups
of users and buyers on ever larger terms and control their habits and processes
of identification. If there were only individuals with unique behaviors
and eccentricities there would be no advertising because advertising
is viable only through a practice of predictable behaviorism's. When
will consumer boredom out quicken the manufacturing of new goods/messages?
The real game in a hyper-capitolistic society such as ours exists here.
This is why it is imperative to reach foreign markets. When our consumers
stop smoking, due to a real understanding of ethics, spawned by a subjective
invocation of enlightened self nature and therefore health, an implosion
of artificial nature will make it impossible to persuade consumers to take
part in something which is harmful or which has no value. The consumer
who no longer hates himself, who does not consider himself ?sophisticated??an
artificial construct, but who is in contact with his ?real nature? will
not harm himself anymore or others. He will not accept that which is not
?true?. He understands more of what is false and harmfull in every sense
even when subtle and thus has become simple. He will only buy what is essential.
He is a perennial 75 year old and only purchases what he needs. The rest
is for those ?who do not no better? and are still ?amused?. He has been
exposed to and knows well the seams of industry and it's methods of behavioral
control. This is why cable television must be exported as quickly as possible
to Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. They are new to our ways of lying and
we will have perfected the art to such an extent that the Foreigners reality
will be so pale he will think himself living in an inadequate dream and
needs a Mercedes, a ?new? one, a new reality to go. Violence will increase
as it has in our most impoverished ghettos here at home, but they will
have new borders that our admen will have erected and their bullets will
not harm us. The grid will be complete. ?Surdom Taú

????????????????????????????????????????????????

Selfvolution
?An Evolution Towards A Subjective Infinity?
Surdom Taú

?To paraphrase Descartes: I am tried and I try, therefore I am conscious.??Karl
H. Pribram

You may choose to wonder how this type of language comes about and from
what impulse does it tarry forth? You may choose to look at the world and
see only it's effects, or you might stand against the tide external
flux and examine the causating principals nature, the (a)ffects, and consequencialities
on it-self and on your-self. The first method of visionality is one of
looking, the latter is s-e-e-i-n-g. But if you were to turn yourself around
to seeing, according to the great wisdom traditions of Socrates, Buddha,
Sartre, Hippocrates, Hunefer, Krishnamurti, Pythagoras, Jesus, Lao Tzu
and indeed many others, we would find the same person. We would find the
one who sees, that to which we would become. Supposed we had never even
lifted a single chapter, our tongues silenced, and steadying ourselves
to stand in front of the mental mirror. Peering, what would we find in
it? Would we see some thing, or would we see no thing; the death of our
image? Even if we choose not to look, time moves us down this hall of experiential
nature, fragmenting, suffering, consuming, believing, destroying, creating
and of course dying. But before we reach this last word we question, we
pause in reaching a certain maturation of mind ? the pivot, ?why do I do
this in this way and how did I come to it?? Metaphorically speaking, noted
neuroscientist Karl H. Pribram sites our condition, ?I pointed out to her
(agnosia patient) that her arm had become entangled in the bedclothes?she
would acknowledge this momentarily only to ?lose? that arm once more in
a tangled environment. Part of the perception of her body, her personal
consciousness
seems to have become extinguished.?

Unknotting our inquiry further, let us say that all animals have this
procedure, both of doing and being done unto, this means of existence in
common with you the hu-man. We again may ask ourselves ?what distinguishes
my own mode of being from the mode of the animal being?? and ?is there
another way which is qualitatively situated to being particularly human(e)??
For the answer, one may look to the scientific and historical literature
so widely available in our information gathering places for strict ?traditional?
definitions of the genealogical differences between animal man and man.
Or one may try something completely different. Where the former is an internalization
of external artifacts, the method of difference in the latter results in
an externalization of internal artifacts. The process is inverted. Again
Karl H. Pribram states: ?For once the recent findings of science and the
spiritual experiences of mankind are consonant. This augers well for the
upcoming new millennium?a science which comes to terms with the spiritual
nature of mankind may well outstrip the technological science of the immediate
past in its contribution to human welfare.?? Lastly, and the main question
this externalization of internal truths intends to posit is ?what would
one find in this selfhood??

Firstly, what one finds there is this questioning, to sense something
more just behind the veil of external objects, and in our groping for lack
of contact with what lies behind this self, our primary subjective condition
of being. But if we go this far, in answer to the question we need to know,
and if that thing that we need to know has parts, constituencies, ways,
as all objects in the natural universe do. To ignore them and to only recognize
the external act leads us back to the expulsion. Through Plato, Socrates
jibes us in the Apology: ?If I do not know what something is, how could
I know what qualities it possesses?? The inverse is also true; if I do
not its constituencies how do I know what it is? But if we ask what is
the nature of what I am experiencing and what is it's form-ula, we may
get to the interiority of that area of thought where all beliefs are built
upon premises, foundations either faulty or enduring. As we proceed to
uproot the fleeting images and half truths, as we mete out the pathologies,
insecurities and damaged seeds of the mind tree; those weeds destroyed
may give way to a healthier life, a life bound and built upon the lasting
reason of what has been inspected thoroughly and secured as healthy, we
might include ourselves in the process of knowing and becoming. Through
Foucault we learn, ?Epictetus insists that one must be in an attitude
of constant supervision over the representations that may enter the mind.
He expresses this attitude in two metaphors: that of the night watchman
who does not let just anyone come into the town or the house; and that
of the moneychanger or inspector?the
arguronomos?
who, when presented
with a coin, examines it, weighs it in his hand and checks the metal and
the effigy ...(and)... one needs to determine whether or not one is affected
or moved by the thing that is represented, and what reason one has for
being or not being affected in that way.? It is at this nexus of external
objects and internal subjects that come under the scrutiny of the witness
within. These subjects mutate over time as all organisms do, and they morph
with language, the language that has become the description of our internal
mind state. What have these morphologizing subjects of the internal language
of mind become? Is it at all clear? have you checked on them lately? Also,
what is the quality of this witness who gazes upon this shifting language
of internal states? Does the trash get prepared with the food and the gross
with the subtle? Does it even know or recognize the abstraction of these
internalized values, and by what method does it use to assign this value
system of mutating states of consciousness? Also, as it works the door,
does it know the many rooms of the interior over which it stands and how
to maintain these rooms, hinges, and windows as they degrade with ill use
and the stress of time, and contextualizing environments?

Who would put fine things in a crumbling room under a leaky roof next
to garbage?

A question itself leads to knowledge. The one who knows came
to this state through a series of movements which lead to that knowledge.
These movements take the form of evocations and invocations in appealment
of the truth. Whether they be experiences or internal silent linguistic
petitions. They are questions in that the person experiences something
which is not known and needs to know. This is a fundamental course of nature
in man. It is this machination of knowledge through what is not
known and what is known which marks mans development and defines
him as a human being. He does both what he knows and what he does not know.
Which is better? Pay attention, values are operating here. Where man does
not know himself to himself, and in relation to his outer world we are
most likely to find suffering, violence, aggression, pain, and a general
groping through actions which do not know. Where a human being knows,
this very same movement can define his better nature and the actions which
emanate through him cause fluidity, effortlessness, definition, clarity?the
culmination of understanding. Think of an expert butcher with 20-20 seeing
versus a blind apprentice butcher. But it is possible to
memorize the actions without knowing them, as a machine follows a program
? that is ? input. The outputs are the same only within the context of
the environment that these memorized actions are designed for. How do these
same actions work outside of that specific environment? Bertalanffy reflects
upon us: ?...dissatisfaction with the mechanistic attitude has led to a
multitude of developments in psychology which are different in content
but which agree in the rejection of the robot model of man.? So then, the
ability to context then starts with the knower not the mimic. Knowing
the meaning of these words is not the same as looking at these words.
There you would copy the words ? albeit, perfectly ? as a drawing in the
mind, without transcribing their meaning, and at a deeper level the relationships
between the meaning in the text and your inner knowledge areas. Who is
sifting through the text and weighing the words, combining the old language
with the new and reformulating a spire towards truthism and the questions
which support them? Who would look at a house from the street and know
it's folk, and who would dare enter that house and know them? Foucault
unifies this practice of self when he says, ?But I became more and more
aware that in all societies there is another type of technique: techniques
that permit individuals to effect, by their own means, a certain number
of operations on their own bodies, their own souls, their own thoughts,
their own conduct, and this in a manner so as to transform themselves,
modify themselves, and attain a certain state of perfection, happiness,
purity, supernatural power. Let us call these techniques ?technologies
of the self?.?

This practice of self knowledge is the personification of humanity.
It's humane-ness is defined by this self knowledge. Humanity and Humane-ity
are different, but they have the potential to be the same. Who will en-join
them? What then are the hallmarks of this ability for self knowledge, this
way to the lost self, a humane-ity of reason? Attention is needed
as a mediator, guiding the Ability to the Knowledge of who
you really are. Honesty between the Witness through the Ability
guides us to the Object of Our attention which is the Universal Mind.
Courage
lifts the Faculty of Attention, helping Ability past the carnage of the
Internal
Struggle. There are many other things along the way that you will see
which will confuse you, shock you, frighten you, intimidate you and even
fight you. But these are only stepping stones to your infinite goal. Are
you ready? This voyage is not for cowards. Stamina and
Endurance
are also helpful, pitching in when Attention lets slip. So you will need
a few exercises to keep your Attention fit and consistently at the helm.
Scientifically speaking, Karl Pribram points the way through this vast
hall of mirrors: ?States of consciousness are linked to electrochemical
configurations of synaptodendritic domains; conscious processing to attention,
volition and thought. The contents of consciousness fall into three major
categories: (1) the construction of personal and extrapersonal objective
reality by virtue of processing by systems of the posterior cerebral convexity;
(2) the construction of narrative composed of episodes and eventualities
as processed by the fronto limbic forebrain. Finally, (3) we distinguish
a transcendental variety of consciousness that goes beyond narrative by
freeing the cortical dendritic micrprocesses entirely from the spatiotemporal
constraints so essential to the construction of personal and extrapersonal
reality?..He further states, ?There is some intuition which fails to
be addressed by analysis.?

What are the benefits of this self knowingness? Clarity, dissolution
of fear, empathy, centeredness, attentive aloofness, increased ability
to listen, patience, calm, mental endurance, passion, insight, gravity,
lightness, increased ability to sleep, a new sense of proportion, optimism,
essentialistic values, compassion, flexibility, truthfulness in speech...The
best part of this adventure is that it costs nothing next to time and a
personal commitment to yourself. We would do well to listen to the ancient
Zen Master Kuei-Shan, ?Over the ages you have followed objects, never once
turning back to look within. Time slips away; months and years are wasted.?

Somewhere right now a computer is crashing, or is waiting to crash,
and like it's owner the problems may or may not be revealed. It's entirely
up to the owner of the machine. Who owns the machine? Who's in charge?
An owner has responsibilities. He or she must have them, that's
the price of being human(e). To take care of something properly, maintain
it, nurture it, develop it, fix it, listen to it, hearing its creaking
and groaning is entirely a matter of choice is it not? But the outcome
is predictable. The machine will fail or succeed depending on the care
that is being willed through it by your Attention. Are you paying Attention?
Still finer is the immutable presence of consciousness and the thoughts
that lay within it. Have no fear, most everyone is crashing, both the high
and the low. Some how, some way, some day near, everyone and everything
crashes. The challenge thus begun, lay down arms and impale yourself on
the reason of seeing yourself true-ly. Stop construction and examine the
work being done. Know what is chaff and Know what is wheat. It will save
you time and energy double fold. Live now, in the present. Know others
too by this s-e-e-i-n-g way, and help them if they ask. But with your treasure
neatly hidden, available, but hidden. Self Knowingness is not for everyone.
It's for you. By the time you weed through the scrap metal and rusty hinges,
throwing them out, your body may be old, but your mind will be new, sharp
and true. This way is the oldest secret in the world. Make an art of
yourself.?Surdom Taú

AIRCRA
by Franz Pomassl

AICRA is based on cockpit voice recordings and "Black Box"
signal analysis data from airplane crashes.

About this piece, conceptual artist Franz Pomassl (who
describes himself as a "phycho/physio musician") says:
"Traditional listening habits are disrupted; the
uncompromising sounds challenge the attention and
     reciptivity of the (radio-)listener, potentially
provoking new kinds of aural phenomena and
     psychacoustic events.."
