i'm not quite sure. remember that pe liked to call themselves the cnn of
america's black population. so a lot of their politics is obviously
grounded on the idea of independent communication channels. so why not
using internetradio? your critique could apply to us all if we would think
about it for a moment: this way of "going internet" is quite fascinating in
his own right.

the new protected standard of sdmi is combined with a propaganda war
against "piracy", which is of course ridiculous. it's simply the
ideological weapon in a war for re-installing their monopoly. pe got in
trouble when they put old hits on their website, because they thought
polygram wouldn't do their job properly in realeasing and distributing them
on a compilation. they had to remove them. so the free track on their
homepage *swindler's lust* states: "if you don't own the master, the master
owns you." that's not only a question of technical, but also of legal
formats, which can't be hacked as easily.

you are right with the remark regarding 'market penetration'. (yes, what an
idea...) the industry's big players are quite sure that their new format,
which is negotiated at the moment, will be a bulldozer. their market power
combined with permanent legal attacks against mp3 should succesfully
install a de facto standard for music recordings.

but some days ago the recording industry association of america (riaa) lost
the trial against rio, the portable mp3 player, which might be a good sign.

anyway: you need a cable modem to download these mp3 tracks fast enough to
make sense of that whole thing. otherwise it's just annoying. let's praise
our tape recorders.
ciao
u
