a ) what is the digital space programme?

it is a series of sound and sound-led multimedia projects, commissioned
through lovebytes.

it is initiated to investigate the ways programmers, multimedia developers
and digital musicians share common ground, whilst critically addressing
presumed distinctions and working practices between them.

the digital space programme encourages creative collaborations between
these types of practitioners in any configuration.

b) what is make/mutate ?

make/mutate will be a cd+cdrom :

disc i) a cdrom containing interactive sound-led multimedia artworks
disc ii) an audio cd of sound and new experimental digital sound and music

make/mutate is aimed at the adventurous electronic music market,
encouraging aesthetic exploration and research through digital sound
projects.

the finished cd+rom will be distributed through specialist record stores,
experimental music outlets, the internet and art venues. the cdrom and the
cd will be packaged together, sold at the same price as a standard
album-length cd.

c) what is lovebytes ?

lovebytes is a non-profit making arts organisation which explores and
promotes the creative potential of digital art and multimedia.

since 1994 we have organised a biennial festival of digital art in
sheffield (next in april 2000).

the lovebytes lab is a group working environment for the production of
digital art and media. it is also the headquarters of the lovebytes digital
arts festival.
the lovebytes lab will provide production facilities for the digital space
programme.

1. how to submit a multimedia proposal for make/mutate

introduction

multimedia developers, artists, programmers, musicians (and combinations
of) can submit proposals for cdrom based work as teams or as individuals.

lovebytes may be able to suggest collaborators - especially for
practitioners without all relevant authoring/ programming skills.

proposals can include
i) interactive music systems
ii) generative music software
iii) sound manipulation works
iv) visual art sound pieces
v) tools and toys

and any combinations of the above

delivery environment
works proposed must be able to function in a native macromedia director
environment and must work cross-platform, on standard pc and mac operating
systems. however, non-director proposals (i.e. specific generative music
software and
runtime versions of unusual applications) may also be considered.

it would be expected that multimedia applicants would deliver projects with
open code, to allow the integration of each project into the overall cdrom.
further to that, projects should be able to run either direct from cd or
with a
minimal (under 10MB) footprint.

platform requirements
the proposed work must be able to operate without any unique external
peripherals (see minimum and target platforms below) :

minimum platforms
a) mac : 150mhz 604e powerpc, 32mb ram
b) pc : 150mhz pentium, 32mb ram

target platforms
a) mac : 233mhz g3, 32mb ram
b) pc : pentium ii 233mhz, 32mb ram

pieces must function inside of a monitor resolution of 800x600 and should
not require the monitor's bit depth to be set above 16bit / thousands of
colours.

space available for multimedia projects
maximum size for individual projects, including any installations, tech
notes, or help files must not exceed 150mb

production cycle
a multimedia project production cycle will be four weeks of development &
production plus two weeks of functionality testing on both target
platforms. These six week blocks would be scheduled between september and
december 1999.

where ?
scheduled work may take place in the lovebytes lab, at no cost. projects
can take place overseas, provided guarantees of work are contracted.
however, final build of work will take place in the lovebytes lab in
sheffield.
contracted artists working outsideof the lab will be expected to adhere to an
agreed structure of communication and sharing of information -
i.e. use of ftp, email and telephone.

budget
budgets of up to £3000 are available for interactive work. this includes
all costs and fees which applicants must state as part of their budget.

equipment / support
lovebytes is able to provide a full service multimedia
production facility for use by artists. our equipment includes (but is not
limited to) numerous apple macintosh g3 machines with sufficient memory and
processing power for large scale multimedia projects. We also provide windows
and nt authoring environments.

our support of macromedia director covers both introductory and advanced
levels of development.

multimedia proposal checklist. please enclose :
*written proposal, including details of how the project will engage with
it's audience
*c.v. including all contact details, two references, plus a record of
proven ability in creating proposed work
*examples of past work on any of the following : cdrom / dvd / dvc / dvcam
/ vhs / dat / cd / vinyl / minidisc / zip / 44mb syquest / imation
superdisc
*detailed budget breakdown including fees (not to exceed £3000)
*technical requirements and equipment needed
*technical assistance required
*correctly weighted self addressed envelope for the return of materials

note:
projects will be reviewed blindly. materials submitted should therefore not
have indentifying information on it with the exception of the c.v.

proposals will be selected by a panel, on the basis of :

2. how to submit an audio proposal

introduction
the audio projects consist of a series of residencies of up to 5 days each.

information.

the central aim of these audio residencies is to create new digital sound
works for the cd with the audio software and hardware available in the
lovebytes lab.

the audio software and hardware in the lab can be used for digitally
manipulating and subsequent composing and multitracking of audio and music.

new sounds

the digital space programme aims to explore, develop and promote new
electronic sound that embraces recent developments in software (including
shareware) such as supercollider, metasynth, audiosculpt and others. the
programme also seeks to develop relationships with groups or individuals
working in the peripheryof sonic research and development.

individual working practices are supported. users can also bring sounds or
additional hardware into the lab for generating new digital music and audio.

equipment

works to a professional technical standard in a 24 bit hard disk recording
environment. the lab is a shared space, and requires working with headphones
(at least part of the time).

fee
£300 is available, for each short electronic audio residency as a fee. in
addition, £15 a day living expenses and accommodation in central sheffield
is also available.

desktop music applications and hard disk recording. you will engineer and
produce your own work. general introductory support to the system is available.

audio proposal checklist. please enclose :
*previous audio work on any of the following : cd / minidisc / dat / audio
cassette / vinyl
*a description of the kind of work you would like to develop in the lab
*c.v. / resume Including two references plus previous audio / musical
releases /
experience
*technical assistance required (if any) and any extra hardware you wish to
bring
*correctly weighed self addressedenvelope for the return of materials

works will be selected by a panel, on the basis of :
previous work / engaging aesthetic of sound / ability to develop residency
work / ability to work in sheffield / legibility and presentation of
application

note:
projects will be reviewed blindly. materials submitted should therefore not
have indentifying information on it with the exception of the c.v.
