On Monday the 22nd November, Asian Dub Foundation will be at The Scala,
Kings Cross, in London to hold a benefit gig in aid of The Free Satpal Ram
campaign. Joining the ADF Sound System will be D.J's from the Primal Scream
Team, Clinton (Cornershop), Daddy G (Massive Attack), Annie Nightingale
(Radio 1), John Kennedy, Aktarvatar, John Kennedy (Xfm), Pete Holdsworth,
Headrillaz and many more celebrities and D.J's. Also there to add their
support will be Irvine Welsh , Howard Marks, Adrian Sherwood, Sean Hughes
and the "Goodness Gracious Me" crew. The money raised from this gig will be
donated to the "Free Satpal Campaign", in order to pay the legal costs of
Satpal Ram.

It is a winter evening. Satpal Ram and his friends are enjoying a meal in
The Sky Blue Restaurant, Lozells Road, Birmingham, after finishing work.
The restaurant is playing songs from Hindi films. A party of white
customers begin to hurl abuse at the staff, initially, because of the music
which is being played. "We don't want no Paki-Wog music. Black crap !".
Satpal intervenes on behalf of the waiters. The situation
escalates, the opposing man, Clarke Pearce begins to throw glasses, racist
accusations are flung. Mr. Pearce approaches Satpal Ram, he brandishes a
broken glass in Satpal's face, shouting, he slashes at Satpal's face and arm
slicing them open. There is blood everywhere and smashed glass is flying.
In fear, Satpal Ram produces a pen-knife, which he used at work, and in the
scuffle Clarke Pearce received two wounds. On admission to hospital Mr.
Pearce refused treatment, he died some time later from a puncture wound to
his lung.

The Free Satpal Ram Benefit Gig has come about for two reasons :

1. Satpal Ram admitted killing Clarke Pearce in self defence. He has never
denied this fact. Under British Law self-defence is not considered a crime.
Yet, Satpal Ram was given a life sentence for murder. He should never have
been imprisoned at all.

2. After thirteen years, Satpal Ram has been constantly victimised, abused
and mentally tortured by the British judiciary and prison systems. The
average number of moves for prisoners sentenced to life, is usually on
average five. Satpal Ram has been "touring" Her Majesty's Prisons for
thirteen years now, he has moved from jail to jail 59 times. He is regarded
as a problem prisoner because he has constantly campaigned, not just for his
own release but also for others who have been wrongfully imprisoned. What
has ensued is another gross miscarriage of justice. It is yet another nail
in the coffin of the British judiciary system, as far as Black, Asian,
people of colour and all other right-thinking people from Britain, are
concerned.

The Stephen Lawrence and Ricki Reel cases have begun to define
institutionalised racism.
Naming this evil has not eradicated it.
Satpal Ram has paid with thirteen years of his life.

The bands and DJ's involved with the benefit at the Scala are convening to
draw attention to this fact. "Free Satpal Ram" is their mantra. On the 1st
of December Satpal Ram will face his second parole hearing. This is a
opportunity for the parole board to free an innocent man. It is vital
however that the public, the government, the judiciary and prison systems
are made aware that the campaigners on Satpal's behalf will not go away,
they will be as persistent and bullish as the establishment have been.

Justice is Everyone's Right.

" We maintain that Satpal was right to defend himself against an unprovoked
racist attack. He should never have been sent to prison. Self Defence Is
No Offence."
Asian Dub Foundation

Satpal Ram is very aware of the interest in his case, he would like everyone
to know that his morale is constantly lifted and he is heartened by the
depth of public support for his plight.
