hi monika,
it actually seems that christmas is over. i don't think it's mere coincidence, that zina's and adam's open letter reached Xchange a few days before the nrd 99 text. the analysis behind both of them is identical: as we all expected - and thus barely surprising - netcasting has become the battleground for e-commerce. you can react to this fact by suggesting that Xchange needs its own portal to sharpen its profile in order to meet the needs of an attention economy, which is not a bad idea.
the nrd 99 text is dealing with this issue in an obviously much more polemic way, which you of course can interpret as a dubious 'action' (as your quotation marks suggest). maybe this is simply a question of taste, or what kind of humour you like or dislike. but you should also bear in mind that this text and the dubious 'action' it promotes is not designed to create a solution for the dilemma, but to deal with it in a more discoursive way.
this is *not* the declaration of the end of netcasting as a democratic tool for individuals and small groups, but simply a reflection of the status quo. obviously a lot of people here on this list dedicate a lot of time, intellectual, physical and emotional energies to the idea of bottom-up media and of course these efforts should never be dismissed as useless or whatever. another question is: is it enough to believe in a 'bit different world' without having a look at the economic and political realities around. in my view (which more or less can be seen as representative for the colleagues of mikro/convex as well) the idea behind nrd 99 is first of all to find out what all the numerous groups have produced until now. it's a small thing, which simply marks a point in time and creates a short history of all these activities.
take it as a surplus file to all the files archived around the world. something that creates a moment of density in which as many people as possible find themselves represented.
it shouldn't stop anyone to 'go for it' and it couldn't do that anyway.
bye
