ACOUSTIC.SPACE.LAB -
International symposium on radio wave and satellite technologies August
4-12, 2001 in Latvia.
http://acoustic.space.re-lab.net

ACOUSTIC.SPACE.LAB, an international symposium on radio wave and satellite
technologies, seeks to gather together media artists, social activists and
radio scientists to explore the combination of arts, communication and
transmissions technologies, and to launch an International Acoustic Space
Research Programme. In the developing the programme such groups as
E-Lab/RIXC (Riga/LV), L'audible (Sydney/AU), r a d i o q u a l i a
(Adelaide/AU-NL-UK) Radio 90/CSS (Banff/CA), Radio Jeleni (Prag/CZ-USA),
Projekt Atol (Ljubljana/SI), Fallout (London/UK), Irational
(London-Bristol/UK), and others are/will be involved.

The main location of this symposium will be the Ventspils International
Radio Astronomy Center (VIRAC), located in the forests of western Latvia in
Irbene. Here, Latvian radio physicists and astronomers have undergone the
process of restoring a 32 meter dish radio-telescope left by the Soviet
Army in 1994.
Participants in this symposium will investigate both the receiving and
transmitting capabilities of this short-wave radio antenna, and will
conduct workshops in related artistic, social and technological issues.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS AND INPUTS:

We would like to propose that the Xchange discussion list be used for
bringing up questions and ideas regarding this project.

The main question is, of course, what exactly can we DO with this amazing
resource on our hands-in a technical, artistic AND theoretical sense?

Specifically, we are looking for input and proposals on how to actually use
the Irbene Radio-telescope, which is a 32 meter wide shortwave (alterable)
dish in the forest of Latvia. It is currently being used as a powerful
radio telescope for radio astronomy, receiver-equipment is tuned in to the
high (10-12 GHz) frequency - to receive signals from the planets (which
also can be turned in to pictures, using a software). But there also can be
connected other type of shortwave receivers to antenna.

More info on the Irbene Telescope can be found at:

construction?sorry)

Our goal is to spend three or fours days at Irbene conducting "experiments"
on the dish and collecting material (audio, video, technical, theoretical,
etc) to make a presentation of "results" - streaming-session in Riga a few
days later, on Sunday, 12th of August, 2001.

Also, we will be holding Live Chat on the re-lab.net IRC #xchange on
Fridays at 9 AM GMT: http://irc.re-lab.net/xchange/
IT IS RIGHT NOW!!! :)
(if it seems not good time, please propose some other time)
(For help converting that to your local time?and I know I usually need
it... try: http://www.timezoneconverter.com/ )

More information about the symposium follows. (As there are limited places
to stay and not good living conditions, we plan to organise in parallel the
other workshop on net.radio and pirate FM radio in Liepaja's Karosta. So,
if you are interested, don't hesitate to contact us!)

We look forward to your input!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Acoustic.Space.Lab symposium will take place in August 4-12, 2001 in
Irbene, Latvia, in the frameworks of annual International new media
festival "ART+COMMUNICATION" (http://rixc.lv/01), organised by the The
Center for New Media Culture RIXC (http://re-lab.net, http://rixc.lv) in
Riga, within the framework of Riga-European Cultural Month Programme
(http://riga2001.lv).

The Festival and Symposium is organised, and Acoustic.Space.Lab Programme
is developed with the support of Latvian Cultural Ministry, Latvian
Cultural Capital Foundation, Daniel-Langlois Foundation for Arts, Science &
Technology, Prince Bernhard Foundation, Soros Foundation, Goethe Institut
in Riga, and others.
