The II International “ORIGAMI” Symposium, which will take place
in August in Smiltynì, Klaipìda, is an attempt to look at the traditional art of
folding in different way, i.e. using various materials, which are
associated in one way or another with paper. The
Symposium’s materials are: wood, corrugated cardboard, and, of course, paper.
The Symposium’s organisers will not restrict the creative ideas of the artists.
However, in creating work, the importance of ecology and its significance in
modern civilisation must be taken into consideration. A tree, of course, is one
of the most important symbols of cleanness and life. 12 artists from diverse
European states and from Lithuania will participate in the Symposium.

(An Open Letter to) TM Selector,

I just received the latest issue of The Wire (UK) magazine, which is perhaps
the only mass-market music magazine in the entire world that has a scrap of
integrity left to it. Imagine my suprise to find Radio Jeleni smack dab at
the center of the magazine in the Charts and Playlists section, shining
brightly in the middle of the "15 Net Radio Stations" list you had
submitted. Other net.radio luminaries listed include: ORANG, Fallout,
Contour, Laudible, and OZONE. Excellent company, indeed!

Having read this, I recalled the great write-up you gave Jeleni's IMF
coverage last year in the second issue of the TM.SELECTOR print magazine:

***"Listening to the streams coming from Radio Jeleni in Prague during the
IMF protests was a far more visceral experience than watching it on TV.
Radio Jeleni is part of a growing number of locally run net-radio stations
world-wide who are emerging out of the global anti-capitalist movement. It's
great radio, capturing the political spirit at large along with good music
and humour."***

The IMF protests have come and gone, and with it much of the international
attention that was focused on Prague and the Czech Republic for a brief,
pixelated and net-congested five minutes. And since then, Radio Jeleni has
suffered the fate of many web-streaming projects--going from 3000 listeners
back to 3. No one is getting rich at Jeleni, let alone famous, but the
troops keep marching on, and Radio Jeleni is still a unique source for Czech
and English language cultural commentary and progressive music.

Although I left the Director's chair at Jeleni late last year, I still, like
many others, listen with hungry ears. The field of net.audio is far from
well-trampled, and the cross-over possibilites between streaming media and
other media arts become wider every day.

The Acoustic.Space.Lab conference to be hosted by RIXC (Center for New Media
& Culture - Riga) in Latvia this August will explore the theoretical,
technical and artistic connections between streaming media, radio waves and
satellite technology. On August 12, we will present our "findings" streamed
live on the web, and we look forward to the participation of the net.audio
community at large.

More information on Acoustic.Space.Lab can be found at:
http://gracies.org/spacelab

Thanks once again for the props!
Best,
Derek Holzer
