work in progress (I've got stuck with that since a few months... anyway, the
text to be found on the website could be inspiring to some people)

The strongest impression which I had on what radio can cause and how active
people can become because of radio is dated back to the year 1990/91. During
the
change in (still) GDR and the following lack of govermental power the
Youthradio
DT64 has played a very important role to the process of opening our mind
toward
change in cultural and political fields.
The program was delightful fresh, as if they would try out everything they
had
discussed through the times of stagnation until 1989. Not only that they
played
all styles of contemporary music from punk to mainstream to electronic -
they
supported all kind of new basis-democratic ideals - strong participation of
listeneners in program, engaged reports on corruption and mistakes of the
old
and the upcoming power, critical comments on the process of unification with
the
FRG.
When the law of FRG was established on the territory of former GDR in
Oktober 91
a lot of holes in the structures of power and control where refilled by new
laws. Thus it was planned to close all former GDR radiostations to establish
the
federal modell of massmedia that was integrated to the ideal of western
democracy. This also meant to close Youthradio DT64. In the same moment this
thought was formulated in public a alliance of radiomakers and listeners was
formed.
Like true fans we wore DT64 stickers on our clothes, organized
demonstrations
and meetings to put pressure on the authorities and were in steady contact
with
the radiomakers to take influence to the program. This somehow naive attempt
to
save our station was fought out with a lot of emotions.
When for the first times the station was switched of, huge demonstrations
took
place. After a week or so DT64 was again on air to be precise: on medium
wave.
Now it started a search for grandmas and -dads radioreceivers which used to
have
the best antennas for AM. But people were still listening to it. Thus it
went
another few months.
The radio-makers situation was difficult, internal fights on how to deal
with
the inofficial coworkers of the secret service called "Stasi" caused lots of
discussion. Also the financial situation seemed unclear and unstable. It
was
clear that although the powerful support by local people the situation could
not
exist for a long time.
There spread around a lot of utopias from August 89 till winter 91 - direct
democracy, whole streets of housesquads (e.g. Mainzer Strasse) or
noncomercial
radio, the possibility of direct participation in all processes of society.
If
you want, call it a Temporarus Autonomus Zone (Hakim Bey).
The station was splitted up into two: Radio Fritz and Radio Sputnik which
still
exist. Sometimes hidden in the latenight-earlymornign programm You will
listen
music that reminds You of DT64.

If interest exist, I could hold a informal lecture of 1hr "introduction on
black
holes" including some additional comments on "how to observe black holes by
radio telescopes" which I would work out especially for this event. This
could
maybe lead into some more general discussion or it could be connected with a
general introduction to radioteleskopy given by someone else.
I can offer knowledge in the usual technologies (net, video, sound) and
could
offer the possibility of music-programming/composing with the pc/mac
software
"reason" that can be connected to midi-signals in a easy way but with
restricted
functions (in comparision to max/msp).
so far
best
