" `bombus terrestris´ represents a fragment of almost untouched nature
in a mediascape abounding with artificiality."  (H. Geerken).

`bombus terrestris' is a work in progress based on a radio-piece for
which the author, for several months and with several microphones,
recorded the sounds of bumble-bees building and maintaining their nest.
Geerken montaged his recordings without any technical manipulations
according to a manuscripted score, which did not only refer to the yellow
stripes of the bumble-bees but also to a sketch of the nest and to the
barcode of the audio-cassettes used for the recordings.

The piece was produced in 1998 by Bayerischer Rundfunk, which
in 2000, also produced the first version of Hartmut Geerken 'writing over'
the original recordings with his own voice.
'bombus terrestris revisited # 2' was produced by The Listening Room, ABC,
Sydney, 2001.

One of the intentions of the artist is to add a new layer of sound to each
broadcast of his piece so that over the years an increasingly complex
web of animal and human voices will unfold.

"as any final form is an illusion, I again and again dive back into the bumble
bees' nest and its 1998 radio production. I attempt to establish new and
spontaneous contacts with the insects and the archived material - most
probably another futile attempt to outwit the triumphs of Western culture.."
