To extend its long-standing interest in breaking down the boundaries
separating disciplinary genres, Brooklyn Academy of Music created a unique
artist-in-residence program last year in conjunction with Lucent
Technologies, which paired three artists working in new media and
communications technology with scientists at Bell Labs. BAM is proud to
share with you the result of this synergy of art and science, Arts in
Multimedia. This series of free new media installations begins, November
20-December 16th in BAM's Hillman Attic Studio (located on the 4th floor of
the main BAM building). Featuring the innovative collaborations between new
media artists and scientists at Bell Labs, Arts in Multimedia showcases the
work of today's top digital mavericks: Paul Kaiser, Nicolas Tsingos, John
Jesurun, Kit August, Dan Lee, Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen.

Trace
Digital artist Paul Kaiser and audio scientist Nicolas Tsingos
Installation Nov 20-Dec 2
Tue- Fri, 6-10; Sat & Sun 2-10pm (until 11pm on mainstage performance
nights)
Discussion with collaborators moderated by Robert Krulwich, ABC News special
correspondent Nov 28th at 8pm

Trace explores the disembodied "traces" we leave within ourselves and in
others, ranging across time and distance. Triggered primarily by Kaiser's
memories of the Cold War in Eastern Europe, Trace's cinematic imagery begins
with undefined particles that coalesce into 3D objects, ghostly moving
figures, voice transcriptions, and video fragments. Matching sounds and
voices travel through the specially designed and sonically controlled
installation space, as if moving in, around, and through the audience.

Virtual Actor
One night only!
Theater director John Jesurun, Bell Labs researchers Dan Lee and Kit August
Lecture/demonstration Dec 5 at 8pm, moderated by Norman Frisch, Director of
Performing Arts at Snug Harbor Cultural Center

Theater director/new media creator John Jesurun and Bell Labs researcher Kit
August will discuss their collaborative efforts in producing Snow, a
multimedia performance by Jesurun. The piece deployed multi-screen video
projections, four actors, and a robotic camera (a "virtual actor") to
investigate received assumptions about point-of-view, narrative structure,
privacy, and surveillance. Virtual Actor includes a special demonstration of
the robotic camera, which is taught to recognize faces and movements, follow
specific individuals, and react to auditory commands.

Listening Post
Sound artist Ben Rubin and statistician Mark Hansen
Installation Dec 6-16
Tue-Fri, 6-10; Sat & Sun 2-10pm (until 11pm on mainstage performance nights)
Discussion with collaborators Dec 12 at 8pm, moderated by Bell Labs
researcher John Chambers

What does the collective voice of the Internet sound like? Listening Post
gives voice to the vast, silent world of the web by transforming collective
online activity and communication into a multi-layered sound installation.
This uniquely designed space monitors thousands of online exchanges in real
time, revealing the patterns and rhythms of people as they communicate.
