Reaching the victims - IRIN Outreach Radio

http://www.irinnews.org/radio/Default.ASP

While e-mail and the web remain the preferred vehicle for
delivering information to those with the relevant technology, radio is
still the only way to reach and inform millions of victims of conflict in
developing countries. By tapping this medium, IRIN hopes to raise
individuals' awareness of developments affecting them through its
'Outreach Radio Project'. The project aims to work with local
broadcasters, supplementing and revitalising programmes. The
goal is to inform and empower local communities, and support
fledgling democratic movements and civil society in parts of the
world where there is little, if any, tradition of an independent and
unbiased media. IRIN Outreach Radio will use information from
IRIN text reports, as well as generating its own material, to produce
a weekly news bulletin of interest to the target audience. This will
include regional politics, developmental and humanitarian issues
written in radio format, translated into the vernacular languages
and disseminated to the partner radio stations for broadcasting.
This service is intended to reach as wide an audience as possible,
containing relevant information that listeners would otherwise not
have access to. Two countries have initially been identified -
Somalia and Burundi. Both have a long history of conflict and huge
refugee populations who want to be informed, as well as internally
displaced people and the general public. As it develops, the radio
project will also produce thematic audio programmes, air interviews
and discussion programmes in a bid to promote peace and
reconciliation. The service will also made available via IRIN's
website and will take advantage of new technology by forming
partnerships with ventures such as the WorldSpace direct media
service which is delivered by satellite
