[Xchange] phonurgia nova: 1st listening festival
Dear colleagues, dear friends,
We are glad to announce the launch of the 1st Listening Festival.
Unique in its genre, this "on line, on site, on air" festival based
in Arles (South of France), is a collaborative project between
various cultural and radiophonic entities, amongst others: the
European Broadcasting Union, INA-GRM, Le Mouv/Radio France, Arte
Radio, Giardini Pensili, French Ministry of Culture.
The ultimate goal is to reveal up and coming talent who through their
original work extend the boundaries of the radio media and of sound
art. The Festival will involve radio broadcasters, web radios from
all over the world, along with the community of sound "alchemists"
and sculptors at large.
We will have at heart to reward authors and producers of original
radio works, whatever format they have chosen to express their
creativity: features, documentaries, essays, drama, soundscapes,
etc?. bringing to the fore an acute sense of sound syntax or
imaginative use of sound.
The RADIO MIX 2003 competition, under the patronage of Radio
France/Le Mouv and INA-GRM, will also encourage musicians and
composers to have an inventive re-interpretation of our
sound-acoustic heritage.
The Festival will be formatted as a genuine "sound marathon" over the
12th, 13th and 14th of July. Open to all, the event will be spread
over various sites in Arles: theatre, private houses, the gardens of
the Van Gogh cultural centre, gymnasium, as many sites where one will
be able to listen to sounds emanating from all over the world.
In 2001 over 400 productions from 23 countries were entered in the
then Phonurgia Nova awards. We hope to exceed the figure for this
year's Festival edition.
A dedicated website (still under construction) will be set up for all
who will be unable to attend the event in Arles. The website will
feature, amongst others, the pre-selected works.
