For immediate release

March 17, 2004– There are only five days left before community radio stations across five continents will go on air in a unique 21-hour broadcast co-production on SUNDAY, MARCH 21st, 2004, known as the UN international Day against Racial Discrimination. The day marks the 44th anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre, when peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were killed in a town in South Africa.

To commemorate the Day Against Racism, Radio voix sans frontièreswill feature a mosaic of programs in various languages, with live and pre-recorded contributions from countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, North and Latin America.

The broadcast will be web streamed on (www.amarc.org/vsf) and relayed via the satellite services of Channel Africa, Global Radio (in Europe), ALER (in Latin America) and RFA (in Canada). Programs will be re-distributed by local community radio stations worldwide.

Here are some highlights of what promises to be the most diverse and dynamic RVSF yet:

Asia-Pacific -For the first-time ever, there will be a special three-hour broadcast from Asia with contributions from community radio stations and producers in Nepal, Sri Lanka, India and the Philippines.

Africa –Working with a team of journalists throughout the African continent, RVSF will be broadcast live from the Simbani News Agency of AMARC Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. Programs will feature stories on child labour, women and employment, muslims in Africa, access to ICTs for community radio, peace building and community radio, female genital mutilation, HIV-AIDS and more.

Europe – Hosted by AMISNET in Rome, there will be a special one-hour Middle East feed from radio stations in Bethlehem and Hebron. Another unique feature is the Link Lusofono, a collaboration between Portuguese speakers from community radios in 12 countries.

North America - For the first-time ever, there will be a one-hour national feed in French by RFA, and a one-hour feed in Spanish by Radio Centre Ville. The English broadcast from KCSB-FM will focus on migration issues: stories from the U.S.-Mexico border, discrimination towards refugees in Canada, the world-wide trend of anti-immigrant legislation. There will also be a special report on the magnitude of the global inequities in rights to communicate and the efforts of civil society to overcome them.

Latin America -From the broadcast centers of Radio Mundo Real in Uruguay in collaboration with Radio Tierra in Chile, the broadcast will feature contributions from community radio stations and producers in Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay and more.
